Individual Counseling for Adults
What should I expect?
The counseling experience is often different for everyone because it is tailored to fit your personality, learning style, motivation for change, and many other things.
It is helpful to identify specific things you would like to get out of counseling and to communicate with your therapist about what does and does not work for you.
Who should try counseling?
Counseling is for anyone who is experiences situations and/or emotions that have changed how satisfied they are with their life. If you have been feeling lost, confused, overwhelmed, down, or stuck, counseling can serve as the reset button that we all need from time to time.
Counseling for Teens
If you are the parent of a teen, you have probably been told that you JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND them! As frustrating as this is, there is some truth to it.
When they were little kids, adults rarely understood what they were thinking or doing, but that was okay--because they were little kids, right? Then, one day, they woke up and were, all of a sudden, miniature adults...and everyone expected them to think and act like adult. But they are NOT miniature adults. They are teenagers, who are caught between the innocent freedom of childhood and the confusing expectations and responsibilities of adulthood.
Consequently, they are misunderstood by everyone...including themselves.
Most teens want, desperately, to understand what their role is and what the world wants from them. Our job is to help them muddle through their ever-changing emotions, set reasonable expectations for themselves, and proceed through life with confidence and a healthy view of who they are and what they want to accomplish.
Even teens who are, initially, hesitant to attend therapy ultimately find it to be a great outlet and walk away with a clearer view of their path forward.
